Mateo’s Journey

The Challenge:
At just 8 years old, Mateo spent his days working in the fields to help feed his family. School was a luxury they couldn’t afford. “I used to watch the other children walk to the classroom in their uniforms,” Mateo recalls. “I wanted to go with them, but my hands were needed for the harvest.”
“One day, I will be a civil engineer. I want to build better roads for my village so farmers can sell their crops easily.” — Mateo
The Turning Point:
When Rooted Hope opened the community learning center in his village, everything changed. Thanks to our donor-funded scholarship program, Mateo received books, a uniform, and daily meals. His parents were given agricultural training to increase their crop yield, meaning they no longer needed Mateo’s labor to survive.
The Future:
Today, Mateo is 12 years old and ranks at the top of his math class.
